farm' banned in Brazil Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (AP) Posted June 27, 2007 |
Rio
de Janeiro airport authorities have expressed concern over efforts by
the Brazilian government to build an undead "body farm". Saying
that "the scavenging birds could endanger low-flying aircraft as
they circled the undead." Local residents also fear that vultures will flock towards the smell of the decomposing corpses. So far at least, the plans have been shelved. The government had announced that it intended to keep up to 20 reanimated cadavers at the facility at any one time. The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro had wanted to use the site to study how necrosis victims decompose under a controlled range of conditions. The reanimates are all secured. Some constantly exposed to the heat of the day, some emerged in water, and some partially buried. Most bodies used by the scientists are made available for medical research by prior consent of the deceased closest relatives. However, local buzzards are interfering with the work. They frequent the skies and often feed on dead animal carcases and other carrion prey on the ground. In their defense, the government stressed that vultures only prey on the dead, not the reanimated, arguing that the movement of the prey would deter any vulture from feeding. The government program has been notoriously short coming with information. However, in an apparent effort to assuage residential fears , newly released plans for the site have been made available. They include an electric fence around the property, a sound system to emit recorded warnings given by predators as territorial markings, buzzard-proof cages to protect exposed undead and a 150ft grass buffer around the farm to absorb potential bacteria carrying, rainwater as it runs off. Regardless, airport officials and local residents both were able to convince a local judge that to allow this 'body farm' was too much of an undesirable element.
