Miami Struggles to Contain Outbreak
North Miami, Florida – (AP)
Posted: Oct. 6th, 2007

Following in the wake of last weeks necro-mortosis outbreak. Miami residents are now faced with the decision - to stay or flee.

Governor Charlie Crist has been heavily ctiticised in the media and on capitol hill for his slow response in isolating and dealing with the infestation. Florida, a state used to dealing with hurricanes, has many more facilities and programs in place to effect evacuation than most US states. However, the Governor has refused to call for an all out evacuation. A statement released from his office today said "This is not like a hurricane scenario. this has to be treated different. In a hurricane warning we can evacuate thousands of people through road ways, trains and airports. But with a plague outbreak everyone leaving Miami has to be screened and cleared to leave. Otherwise the infestation could spread. This creates a logistical challenge of immense proportions."

Frustration
It also leads to long waits and frustrated evacuees. Tempers flair and patience runs out. Police resources have been strained trying to quell unrest at checkpoints on all major highways. People are finding ways past the major stops though. According to state highways commissioner Dale Rice "You can't stop everyone from leaving. There are too many ways out. It's not like a city with walls. We try to filter and screen people on 95N, 75W, 27W and 41W. There are voluntary mortosis screenings at these points. But failure to comply will result in no visa being issued. You need the visa to leave."

Classification
The outbreak is still being deemed a 'Level 2' outbreak. Classed by the World Health Authority as '
Moderately easy to spread They result in a moderate rate of death and/or low death rates. They require specific enhancements of Center for Disease Control's laboratory capacity and enhanced disease monitoring.'

Quarantine
The government has stressed that only residents, 'class A' business owners and emergency workers are permitted to enter the cordoned area.

In an effort to clear any confusion, authorities have started that 'class A' businesses are "businesses essential to the everyday running of the city such as food suppliers, transport workers.

Manufacturers, IT industries, non essential retailers etc. will not be allowed access within the city boundaries.

Supplies dwindling
Retailers report that most essential supplies are running very low. Gas, food, lumber and hardware stores are virtually barren.
