Well, here we go again. And judging by the ratings of its maiden airing, the public has no one to thank but themselves. Of course, I’m referring to Mr. Scot Chierbeck’s newest foray into creative journalism, the syndicated “Undead Zone”.

For those of you who may not know, Mr. Chierbeck was once a reporter and anchor for the Australian Undead News. He rose to infamy on the backs of several Necro-Mortosis and undead scandals involving sensationalistic reporting, charges of hampering security forces to increase the drama before his cameras and then, finally, being convicted in criminal court for his involvement with a proven “zombie farm” in yet another attempt to capture shocking, graphic footage.

So now Mr. Chierbeck has come to the U.S. to produce his show, reportedly because our laws are more lax regarding the broadcasting of questionable footage and what exactly constitutes “inciting panic”. It also seems the American public is far more ready to buy into conspiracy theories, skewed logic and undead footage simply for the sake of viewing it than many other nations that could have played host to his production. And on this is where I rest on this double-edged sword we call journalism.

While I regard myself as more a commentator on the world around me, I am still at heart a journalist tasked with bringing the people fact and logic and letting them decide where they stand on an issue. However, in my current role I am being asked not only for fact and logic, but also for my opinions. Mr. Chierbeck, though it pains me to say, would also be considered a journalist. However, I haven’t seen an editorial claim on his new show. This in turn would lead the average viewer to believe the information he presents has been thoroughly researched and fact-checked and that his sources are reliable and who they claim to be. Sadly, this seems not to be the case. Even more sadly, I find myself having to support at least the presence of his show if for nothing more than in respect to the First Amendment. I’m not ashamed to tell you I have to hold my nose while I do it, and I’m not above calling for Mr. Chierbeck to back up his “real news” claims with some hard evidence when called for, though.

And of course, how could I forget our Grand Master of the Templars of God? I won’t go into the details of his ramblings, but I will note a few key points. First and foremost, if you want to impress me and many other intelligent people you have to follow a few simple guidelines; 1) show your face, 2) don’t appear in a costume and 3) bring something more than wild speculation to the table. I can’t take any man seriously that feels the need to hide his face while he’s purportedly telling me the truth, and the costume simply cheapens what you have to say. You could be telling perfect, 100% truth, but when you break out the Klan robes you lose credibility in all but the most gullible minds. And lastly, I can take any event and fabricate an “it could have happened this way” scenario by working backwards from it. Show me something real to offset the fact you need to hide your face from us.

And on a somewhat personal note to the Grand Master, allow me to briefly clarify something. As many readers familiar with me before my ZWN days, I do not now nor have I ever endorsed any candidate for any public office. I discuss problems and solutions, issues and tactics and engage in logical debate with the end goal of not only enlightening my audience but myself as well. If I agree with a politician’s stance on one issue, you can be almost certain that I will disagree with them on another. No one’s perfect, not politicians, and not me. Show me real, credible evidence to support your claims and I’ll devote a whole piece to getting them out there. Until then, you remain a man behind a mask of hate, wild speculation and hysteria, three things that we need far less of if we are to succeed against the plague.

If you watch Mr. Chierbeck’s show, take it for what it is; a dramatization of the plague. Think of it as a “what if?” scenario. What if Cuba gassed its undead, even though most everyone knows by now that nerve and similar airborne agents have almost no effect on the dead? I mean, their communists, not idiots. What if the U.S. is involved in covering up the plague and the spread of things like the M-Bomb? Most Americans know that, since Watergate, no matter how hard our government may try they can’t keep something happening on this soil from the real press for long. And to Mr. Chierbeck, I disagree with most everything you say and stand for. I abhor the fact you broadcast half-truths and incite panic with irresponsible reporting. And more than anything else, I loathe the simple truth that I and other journalists and intelligent people must support you in your right to do so. But you are coming dangerously close to screaming “fire” in the theater, Mr. Chierbeck. When that day happens, and I truly think it will, no amount of ratings or even the First Amendment will save your reputation. So please, do us all a favor; check your facts, check your sources, check your credibility and for all of us in the news and opinion business, check yourself. That, or run a “For Entertainment Purposes Only” disclaimer before each segment of your show. At least then I wouldn’t feel like I need a shower each time I think about supporting your right to speak.

Arthur Helms is a syndicated columnist who has dealt with a host of social and political issues. His previous syndicated column, “Logic, Please?” offered commentary on a host of world-view issues as seen through the cold yet bright light of plain logic, demonstrated fact and simple common sense.

While the academic and political elite often dismissed his commentary as “too simplistic” for our complicated times, his books of collected columns and hundreds of national speaking engagements each year attest to his connection to a readership yearning for simple answers to complex issues. Helms recently ended his syndicated column to sign on exclusively with Zombie World News, providing a fresh, logical,
plain-English view of the plague and to bring some common sense to what many perceive to be a senseless situation.
