Britain:
CHUNNEL TO REMAIN OPEN
Posted:
December, 2006
British
Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a statement released today, that despite
the increased risk of infection, the Channel Tunnel linking Britain to France
will remain open.
"People of the world
have come to rely on this symbol of Britain's unity with Europe. This gateway
to our sceptred Isle. We will not cave in to fear, nor will we capitulate
under pressure."
This triggered a huge backlash from the Opposition party, and significantly
Blair's own party backbenchers.
This unpopular decision will weaken further Prime Minister Blair's already
fragile position with his electorate.
French Defense Ministry officials had no immediate reaction to the report.
