Chaos engulfed the small hilltop community of Penkhull, as running street battles between police, locals and the undead, threatened to spill into the surrounding areas of Trent Vale and the nearby North Staffs Royal Infirmary. The Greyhound, a 16th. century public house, became the catalyst of a major incident when police were called to quell a disturbance within the bar. When police squad cars arrived, 4 officers attempted to enter the pub. They soon exited and declared a 'Code B' public disturbance. 'Code B' is the name given by British police for a 'Level B' undead outbreak. Fighting between police and the emerging undead was confounded by many locals aiding their undead friends in a misguided attempt to protect them from arrest. Eyewitness Alan Stevenson recounts that "Many of us were outside at the time. "It got hard to tell who was alive and who was a zombie" Stevenson continued. "Lots of people were covered in blood, it's amazing more people were not infected."
33 people were detained. Most of whom, were released after questioning. However, 3 were forcibly sent to an undisclosed quarantine facility for further evaluation. The inquiry goes on to absolve the police of any blame for the riot. It also commends the Greyhound landlord lan Twigg, for his swift response in initially containing the incident by locking the infected inside. 27 people were declared undead and fully animated. All 27 were subsequently 'neutralized' by police. The cause of the outbreak is still under investigation at this point. The quarantine was lifted after 48 hours. A public service for those who died was held at the local parish in Penkull last Thursday.
