Government Bans Stem Cell Research on Mortosis Inhibitor

ZWN (AP)
Posted: Sept. 15th, 2007

In a sever blow to research and development at Amcalon Corporation, President Bush today signed a legislation banning the use of three of the five listed stem cells needed to proceed with development of the highly anticipated XL6 Mortosis inhibitor.

To use an embryonic stem cell, scientists must have access to an embryo outside the woman’s body. The embryo is only allowed to develop for a few days before termination. Researchers isolate and remove the stem cell from the embryo thereby destroying the embryo in the process. Human embryonic stem-cell research is highly controversial and the Bush administration has come down clearly on the side of ethics as opposed to science.

"We are devastated" an Amcalon spokesperson admitted today. "But we will carry on our research. But this delays further advancement at a crucial time when the world is waiting for a solution."

Amcalon stock dropped dramatically on the announcement this week.
